A crime that defies logic

A funny-man making jokes about the statutory rape of a 14-year-old because he disagrees with her mother’s politics . . . a man killing a child’s kitten because his friend couldn’t have it. What is this world coming to?

Our friend Cpl. Gerry “Greasey” Garrett of the Oneida Police Department has filed an arrest warrant on a Daron A. Neal, 22, an Oak Park Apartments resident.

According to the warrant, Neal was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and theft of property after killing a kitten in front of three children — ages three, four and eight.

Garrett states in the warrant that the children, two sisters and their cousin, owned three kittens at the Stanley Street home of one of their mothers. Allegedly, a neighbor — Jennie Botts — came over to the residence Wednesday and tried to get one of the kittens to take it home, but the mother refused to let her.

Yesterday, the warrant states, Neal — described as being a friend of Botts’ — and Botts pulled into the driveway. While the three children were looking out the window, the warrant alleges, Botts handed the kitten to Neal, who “twisted and snapped the kitten’s neck with his hands, killing it, and threw it down on the ground.”

Both Neal and Botts denied to Garrett that it happened that way. However, Garrett recovered a dead kitten from the residence, and one of the children told him that “Daron broke off the kitten’s head and threw it on the ground.”

Neal was arrested, and allegedly became belligerent and argumentative towards Garrett and Chief of Police Mike Cross and Sgt. Ronnie Phillips, who were also on the scene.

The animal was sent to the University of Tennessee’s veterinarian school for an examination to determine the cause of death.

This kitten thing is crazy, but the sad part is that the person guilty of this crime will probably be punished more severally than those committing crimes related to sex and drugs. His sentence will make me ask the question: What has the world come too?

I think this man should be punished the most severe he can be. Not only did he do this to this poor kitten but he did it infront of children. It is disgusting!
