. . . but not the one you’re thinking.
Nick Lamaison, a junior college quarterback, has reportedly signed scholarship papers with UT and is set to enroll before the start of fall drills. There are some other reports that indicate this isn’t true (yet), but either way it is not new news and probably will eventually happen. It was reported in May that Lamaison wanted to come to Tennessee and that Tennessee had shown interest.
Lamaison was a junior college All-American at Mt. San Antonio Community College in California, and passed for more than 3,000 yards and 36 touchdowns. But he was not especially heralded coming out of high school and most think he’ll play more of a reserve role than being able to challenge for a starting spot.
In other QB news, the News Sentinel reports that another California prospect, Jesse Scroggins, is sticking to his July 25 date to announce his intentions. There had been some previous speculation that he was going to bump up the date, which appeared at first glance not to bode well for the Vols.
IN OTHER UT NEWS: There have been rampant rumors around the innerweb in recent days of a fight in Lexington involving UT and Kentucky football players. Some thought this might mark the end of Tennessee’s newfound success in avoiding off-the-field troubles. Jimmy Hyams reported this afternoon on Knoxville’s The Sports Animal that the two players from Tennessee involved were defensive backs Dennis Rogan and Stephaun Raines, both of whom were reportedly at the apartment of Raines’ girlfriend, a Knoxville native who attends UK on a swimming scholarship. According to Hyams (and the Internet rumors), Kentucky players — including standout linebacker Micah Johnson — attempted to break into the apartment, resulting in police being called. The rumors say a shotgun was involved, belonging to the Kentucky players. No arrests have been made or charges filed. Hyams quoted Lexington police as saying that the UT players “did absolutely nothing wrong.”
IN STILL MORE NEWS, Tony Basilio stokes the Urban Meyer-to-Notre Dame rumors by reporting that Florida’s coach was spotted dining with a powerful ND booster.
