It goes without saying that July was cooler than normal. But how cool? In Oneida, our average high temperature was 81.2 degrees. That’s four degrees cooler than our average July high temperature of 85.6 since 1970, and marks the second consecutive year with cooler-than-normal temperatures in July (last year’s average high for the month was 84.5).

We did not officially make it to 90 degrees a single day in July. On average (since 1970), we make it to 90 degrees six days in July. Our highest official temperature in July was 86 degrees, on the 9th, 10th and 13th. There were five days when we didn’t make it out of the 70s, and 11 days when we didn’t get above 80.

Our overall average temperature in July was 70.4 degrees. Our average since 1970 in July has been 73.9 degrees.

We got 9.14 inches of rain in July, making it our wettest month of the year so far. Our average precipitation in July since 1970 has been 5.01 inches of rain.

As for where those rank historically, we’ll have to await the official word from the National Weather Service. Data on the NWS East Tennessee website only dates back to 1970.

So now that we’re in August and it’s looking like an at least an average month, temperature-wise, we can probably expect our string of under-90-degree days to end at some point. On average, we reach at least 90 degrees five times in August, which is exactly the number of 90-degree days we had this month last year. The average maximum temperature in August is 84.8 and the overall average temperature is 72.6, only slightly cooler than July’s averages.

At Knoxville’s McGhee-Tyson Airport, the average high temperature in July was 83.2. Their normal average in July is 87.4. Amazingly, Knoxville hit 90 degrees in July only once. Their average during July is 12 days of 90 degrees or above.

All numbers are official numbers from the NWS.
