Tennessee’s “big gun season” opens tomorrow. It is the granddaddy of the Vol State’s big game hunting seasons.
In Unit B, which includes Scott, Fentress, Morgan and Campbell counties and most of the rest of East Tennessee, the bag limit is three bucks, or however many of those three bucks you didn’t take in archery or muzzleloader of the youth season (no more than one buck per day). That’s a switch from the past couple of years, when the buck limit in Unit B was two. Another switch is an extended season in Unit B to match hunting days in Units A and L. The season will run through Dec. 6.
The peak of the pre-rut seems to be upon us on the northern Plateau, based on reports from the field. A personal report: I’ve seen numerous rubs and scrapes magically appear in the past week, and have seen chasing occurring this week as well. It would be hard to time the opener of deer season any better.
