Thirty-nine Democrats voted nay and one Republican voted aye last night, as the House of Representatives passed health care reform legislation by a 220-215 vote.

In Tennessee, the results were predictable, with all four Republicans and three Democrats voting nay. Lincoln Davis, Bart Gordon and John Tanner voted nay; Steve Cohen and Jim Cooper voted aye.

The next step is the Senate, where Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) has threatened to join Republicans in a filibuster if the legislation includes a public option. If Liberman holds true to that threat and no Republican defects, the bill could be tied up in the Senate for the foreseeable future.

Abortion opponents did win a victory before the bill’s passage, as a resolution banning abortion coverage for any private plan receiving federal subsidies or government insurance plans—except in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in jeopardy—passed by a comfortable margin.
