Winter weather advisory in Kentucky

The National Weather Service in Jackson, Ky., has issued a winter weather advisory for all of eastern Kentucky, including the southern counties along the Tennessee border, calling for 1-3 inches of snow tonight and another 1-3 inches of snow late tomorrow. The official forecast for Whitley City and McCreary County calls for a rain-snow mix tonight (with snow not mixing in until early tomorrow morning) and tomorrow.

The NWS in Morristown may very well issue a winter weather advisory for parts of East Tennessee within the next 90 minutes or so. Currently, a special weather statement is in effect for the entirety of East Tennessee. The official forecast for Oneida and Scott County is for snow tonight, changing over to rain tomorrow before changing back to snow late tomorrow.

The latest runs of the NAM and GFS computer models continue to show different solutions. Both keep surface temperatures above freezing throughout the night. The GFS would have warmer air aloft arriving along with the best precipitation tomorrow morning, while the NAM would have the warmer air holding off until late morning or early afternoon. Perhaps NWS-Morristown is giving the NAM some love with their all-snow forecast for tonight? If the NAM were correct, there would be a possibility for a messy commute tomorrow morning. The NAM has performed poorly this winter, but it did correctly call what happened in Memphis this morning, where up to 5″ of snow were received.

Surface temperatures in Oneida this afternoon have risen to 40 degrees. The forecast high is 41.
