San Diego State can’t be the first upset of the NCAA Tournament (as predicted by CBS’s Seth Davis) but can they be next?
The first day of tournament action has featured several upsets or near-upsets already, in the run-up to tonight’s 10 p.m. tipoff between the boys from the Left Coast and the good guys from the Appalachians.
Vanderbilt proved that the 4th seed is their jinx, falling to No. 11 Murray State of the Ohio Valley Conference on a buzzer-beater. It marked the second straight time the Commodores (whose fans were irritated by President Barack Obama’s pick of the Racers in the first round) fell in the first round after being seeded fourth. In 2008, it was Sienna who ousted Vandy.
The Murray State win is the biggest upset of the day, but not the only one. No. 11 Old Dominion knocked off No. 6 Notre Dame (what’s the law of averages of two 11-seeds winning on the same day?) and No. 10 St. Mary’s knocked off No. 7 Richmond. No. 7 BYU needed double-overtime to avoid a minor upset at the hands of No. 10 Florida, and No. 2 Villanova barely survived No. 15 Robert Morris in overtime.
